Sunday Shopping is an issue that has divided the province of Nova Scotia

A few special interest groups went to court to strike down the existing law, which required the government to show leadership and redraft the law, but in the face of a continuing crusade by the provincial newspaper, the politicians of all three major political parties agreed to allow shopping in Nova Scotia to be unregulated.

In so doing, they refused to heed the wishes of the majority of Nova Scotians as expressed in a referendum.

There have been many referendums in Canadian history and the results have been honoured. Governments would sometime set the bar too high or repeat the referendum to get the desired results, but they realized that denying the wishes of the majority of the voters, only insures that the issue will not go away.

It also puts into question the democratic institutions that define our society and the validity of our leaders that have attained their positions through the voting process.

We hope that you will join us in displaying the sticker that we have created, even if you favour Sunday shopping, as this is not going to benefit our province, if it is used as a precedent for dealing with future issues.
